The problem

A separate branch is not enough when I need to leave one change in progress and work on another. Git worktrees make this possible, but directory creation, dependency setup and navigation repeat. git-wt combines these steps in a small CLI.

Architecture and decisions

A standalone Bash script works as the Git subcommand git wt. The wt shell wrapper also changes to the resulting directory: a subprocess cannot change its parent shell's working directory. Messages go to stderr and the path goes to stdout, so the wrapper can handle them separately.

Project-wide defaults live in worktree.conf; a local configuration overrides them. Setup and teardown commands connect environment preparation and cleanup. The helper also detects branches that exist only on origin and offers to use them.

Status and tradeoffs

The helper automates worktree management, not process isolation. Configuration files are sourced as shell code and hooks execute commands, so they belong in trusted repositories. Parallel agent work still requires separate execution environments and coordination.

repo-manager adds an overview of multiple repositories. See Agentic Engineering for the wider process.
